Description

Although many scribing tools have a pencil-like design, they offer a more superior and precise line when marking or scribing. Mostly used by professional tradespeople or DIY enthusiasts, scribers can be used in a wide range of industries, from woodwork and carpentry, to machining and engineering, even domestic DIY. Scribers are available in many forms, however, the two most common are the engineer's scribe and the carpenter's scribe.

Engineer scribers often feature a much more solid design with a sharper point ideal for use with materials such as metal and steel, whereas a carpenter scriber is designed for marking softer materials such as wood prior to using carving tools.

Commonly known as just a scriber, an engineers scriber tool is used to mark materials, like wood metals and plastics before they undergo machining. Scribers offer precision lines due to them marking the surface by leaving a shallow scratch which is more difficult to erase than graphite or pen.

Carpenters’ scribes will often mark the workpiece with a pencil line instead of a metal pointed tip. We started exhibiting at model engineering exhibitions in 1994 and realised from the shows that people wanted quite specialised tooling for their machines and also a wide range of tooling which they could adapt to suit their needs. This means scribers are not always the best tool for marking out an area of the workpiece that will be visible in the finished part. The durable pointed tips allow you to produce a shallow scratch that won't be easily rubbed out, making them ideal for producing a faint line when measuring or marking materials with precision. They are useful in a wide range of applications and their pen like form means they are easily portable in belts, pockets and toolboxes.

Engineer's scriber - Features a harder, sharper edge for marking metals and hard materials such as steel.

The line marked with a scriber is much more precise than if marked with a pen or graphite pencil and as a result they allow for better overall results in the accuracy of hole placement, cutting etc. If you need to mark precisely for example screw holes etc in machinery, then an engineer's scriber would be well suited. Scribing tools are an excellent addition to any toolset that can be used in a wide range of applications.

Scriber tools are also a much safer and accurate choice for marking, unlike a knife that can potentially damage the material or cause injury. Its knurled body gives a positive finger grip and the sharp ground points are heat treated to give a long life. Engineer’s scribers look similar to pens, whereas a carpenter’s scribe can take many different forms. However for more everyday domestic marking a scriber might be less useful due to the mark being difficult to remove one made.
