About this deal

Twins Arthur and Maudie receive word in Lontown that their famous explorer father died in a failed attempt to reach South Polaris. One will usually have the energy for two and is always there to chivvy the other along in weaker moments and take turns being “the strong one”. It's engaging right from the start and takes you straight into the plot and the intriguing world of the characters.

Arthur is determined to find out, and when disaster strikes and the Brightstorm twins are separated, will he and Maudie be able to find their way back to each other? Arthur and Maudie, the Brightstorm twins, must fight to clear their family name after their father goes missing on an expedition to South Polaris - but is there more to his fate than meets the eye?Twelve-year-old twins Maudie and Arthur’s world comes crashing in when their explorer dad is reported dead in his mission to get to South Polaris. So when they get the opportunity to go on an expedition south, they jump at the chance to fulfill a life long dream and maybe even find their father, or at the very least, find out the truth of what happened on that trip. When disaster strikes, Arthur and Maudie set off on an incredible journey that tests their character and strength – both inside and out. He is portrayed as a vulnerable character who is worried about not fitting in and is really unsure of his purpose. A final appreciation is for the condemnation of rapacious, violent colonial exploration and exploitation, not made a heavy handed Point of, but made very firmly clear.

If you're at all animal-obsessed like I am, then you'll appreciate Parthena, the hawk that belonged to Brightstorm's father, and the thought-wolves that are also discovered along their journey. I've read quite a few children's adventure stories recently, but this fabulous, action-packed tale definitely comes out on top. If you read the book Maudie will tell you several versions of the truth about how he came to lose his own arm, but Arthur is pleased with his iron one. This marvellous book sucked me right into its world from the very first page, and I couldn't leave it out of my hand until I'd finished it.Under Captain Harriet Culpepper, they’ll explore strange lands, meet some extraordinary people, and learn more about themselves, as well as their father. I didn't see the plot twist at the end, I'm extremely curious to see what will happen in the sequel. Wildspark won the Blue Peter Book Award ‘Best Story’ in 2020 and the FCBG Children’s Book Awards and Brightstorm was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, Books are My Bag Awards and Leeds Book Award. The twins don't believe the news, and they answer an ad to help crew a new exploration attempt in the hope of learning the truth and salvaging their family's reputation.

However, I like that Maudie confronted him about this and his lack of caution, which could have dire consequences. We also have a whole load of side characters, like Harriet Culpepper, Felicity Wiggety and Eudora Vane.

You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! The death of Ernest leaves his two children, Arthur and Maudie, orphaned and homeless as an unscrupulous insurance worker informs them that due to their father breaking clause one hundred and fifty two of the Explorer Code all of the Brightstorm possessions are to be repossessed. That is, it COULD have been a balanced story perfect for both boys and girls, except that Arthur does all the narrating.

Arthur and Maudie are the desirable narrators for a childhood adventure story; with one boy and one girl, they can tell a nice, balanced story that most young children will relate to. Brightstorm is a wonderfully paced, absorbing read that delivers a special feeling of adventure reserved for stories that you just cannot put down. Elle compte également parmi les diplômés de la Golden Egg Academy, une école destinée aux auteurs de livres pour enfants et aide régulièrement les nouveaux élèves de l'institution. It’s a whacking adventure of honour and fair play winning out against all manner of foul and dastardly deeds. The basic set-up of the story is quite similar to lots of MG books: one of the protagonist’s parents died; they realise there might be more to it than that; they go on a miraculous journey to discover the truth; etc. Young explorer Harriet Culpepper is heading to the South Polaris, the setting of their father’s disappearance.
