Tiffen Glimmerglass ® is a line of diffusion filters that produces a soft clean halation around practical and specular light sources, while keeping an apparent sharpness on the overall image. A first in this field is the fact that the filter is both effective to look at as well as to look through. But, I personally like using the two filters in these two different situations, Glimmer Glass for day, Black Pro Mist for night – with street photography anyway. Also, the Black Pro Mist filter is another great option at night as it produces a diffusion look, but it tends to keep the diffusion more localized to the light source so it produces more halo-like effects. These add a unique look to the photos already, but regarding subjects with bokeh in the scene, there’s an enchanting glow I haven’t seen before. At night, it’s a little bit too uncontrolled and you get a lot more of various types of reflective artifacts that you have to shoot around. A white reflector can do it, but a silver reflector truly brings out little details that add more to your photos.

The Glimmer Glass is still a great option at night if you are careful how you shoot, but it is really great at providing you with a diffusion effect that’s not too aggressive, but that also has a level of depth to it that you don’t quite see with the other filters. A new type of diffusion filter, the Glimmerglass subtly softens fine details in a unique manner, while adding a mild glow to highlights.On close ups, the apparent sharpness and fine detail is kept as the effect of the filter lowers contrast while softly rolling into the shadow area.

The Glimmer Glass filter has larger particles in it, almost like little flavor crystals that are highly reflective. To give a quick overview, I prefer the Glimmer Glass filters with daylight photography, and I prefer the Black Pro-Mist filters at night. You’ll see its fullest effects when you use a fast-aperture lens and actually have bokeh in the scene. In the day you’re dealing mostly with sunlight and reflected light, and the blooming effect of the Glimmer Glass has a really nice quality filling the frame with a misty effect that really takes some of the hard edges off of the lighting giving it an almost filmmick look.Could the lower contrast be useful if you are shooting in high dynamic range situations, I think so. Then you put a filter that makes things glow and sparkle on top of the lens while giving the scene more light, and you’ve got photos that you can stare at endlessly.
