About this deal

There are times I found myself slack jawed, mainly with disbelief at their stupidity to be honest, and others where I was on the edge of my seat.

It's creepy, pacy, high-stakes and exhilarating with twists, turns, reveals, superb use of misdirection and is the very definition of a nail-biter. That’s the temperature our planetary oven is currently set to, and if we do nothing, that’s the temperature our slowly-heating oven will eventually reach. We’re so used to living in a secure and settled society, we don’t really believe that it could change. Anything but the chilling truth… That someone is watching, waiting, ready to take your life in one hour.

I jumped off bridges and tall buildings, climbed Mount Doom, wore a kimono and went to see a ballet in the Sydney Opera House. However, while everything is very sensitively dealt with in this novel, there are themes of illness and death that might be unsuitable for some younger readers. I have to confess to still working my way through the Helen Grace novels, they can be read as standalones, whereas I have been picking them up as and where I can. Feudalism – the system under which Isabel’s family were required to work for nothing on Sir Edmund’s land – was severely weakened, as was the power of the church. But for the survivors of the terrible plague, a new and freer society will rise from the destruction of the feudal system that enslaved Isabel’s family. Helen and her team really have their work cut out, there are wrong turns, false leads, and a case of mistaken identity.

The suspense filled, short chapters leap back and forth between Helen, Charlie, Justin(in the beginning) and extracts of Martyna’s book. While all this is taking place, some with Grace’s team take risks to follow leads and track down people of interest, so much so that the police brass must wonder whether DI Helen Grace is in over her head. Because if they’re meant to be a reflection of the young adult, it’s a rather one dimensional view of us. Has this just put a mark upon all their heads and just why are some of the victims so reluctant for the truth to come out?

Not because there is any chance the book is going to give me the warm and fuzzies – far from it – but because I can pretty well guarantee I am going to get a book that is entertaining, gripping, infused with great characters, edginess and a mystery that is going to keep you on edge and guessing right to the end.
