Description

Low Modulus Neutral Silicone Sealants are ideal for exterior applications such as the perimeter sealing of UPVC Window or Door Frames, panel joints and joints in concrete and other porous cement based materials as it has more of a weatherproof seal, excellent adhesion and accommodates more movement. So how can we choose the most suitable sealants in the face of so many types to achieve product bonding, leak repair, sealing or other purposes? For internal applications ensure that all the surfaces are clean, dry, sound and frost free. Clean all joints thoroughly to ensure that the adhesion of the silicone to the substrate is not impaired. For "extra flexibility", you can always mix it with silicon, something that is unlikely to happen with other type of sealants. The mixture of acrylic with silicon will reduce its drying time but in general this is something that depends on the weather conditions (humidity temperature) of the exact area.

Generally, it can be used in PVC, aluminum and wood joinery, bathtubs, sinks, tiles and ceramics, and sound, water and dust insulation of vehicles. For hard to reach areas inside or outdoors, expanding foam is a flexible solution for sealing gaps around pipes and wires, while tough and long-lasting exterior sealants can be used on exterior pipework, roofing, guttering, glazing and frames. Akfix 915N Neutral Exterior Silicone is a product developed for use in exterior sealing applications, especially for porous and non-porous surfaces. It provides excellent adhesion. There are two main types of cure; Acetoxy and Neutral. Both curing types cure by reaction with atmospheric moisture. Pyroplex® Intumescent Acrylic Sealant is tested to BS 476: Part 20: 1987, BS EN 1366-4: 2006 and has a European Classification EI240 in accordance with BS EN 13501-2: 2007.Clean. To guarantee the best seal, ensure the area and surfaces you are working with are clean and clear of any foreign objects, such as dust or debris. Polyurethane Sealants have first rate resistance to water, permanent elasticity under all climate conditions and excellent adhesion to metal and fibreglass; they are most commonly used for car, caravan and mobile home applications. Low Modulus Polyurethane Sealants are also safe to use in aquariums and terrariums, as once they are fully cured harmful solvents have evaporated making them inert. Since it is resistant to moisture, low or high temperature, it can be applied to different materials both indoors and outdoors. LANGUAGES What is Silicone Sealant and Acrylic Sealant? Where are they used? HOME BLOG What is Silicone Sealant and Acrylic Sealant? Where are they used? Other Areas of Use of Silicones: It is used in windows, greenhouses, swimming pools, cars and boats and especially to ensure the sealing of joints. Primer is primarily used before applying on floors. On plastic surfaces, sanding can be done for a better and stronger adhesion. Application temperature should be over 5 degrees. When applied to aquariums, the silicone must be cured thoroughly before placing fish and plants. What Are The Differences Between Silicone Sealant and Acrylic Sealant?

Low Modulus Acetoxy Silicone Sealants are the cost effective “all-rounders”, they are suitable for a wide variety of general building, sanitary (when they contain a fungicide), glazing interior and exterior applications and adhere to many common building material. However it is important to note that they do not have the same life span or adhesion properties as the more specialised alternatives particularly on exterior applications. Specialised Silicone Sealants for DIY Use Silicone sealant is a product resistant to moisture, chemicals and outdoor weather conditions. It has high adhesion strength. It stands out with its permanent flexibility. It maintains its flexibility at low and high temperatures. It can be used in places that will be exposed to direct water. It does not cause shrinkage. It is resistant to mold formation. Acrylic sealant is a sealing material, mainly obtained from water-based acrylic resins. It is not suitable for use in locations subject to direct water exposure. As it is a paintable material, acrylic sealant is an ideal material for interior and exterior decoration. It cures after drying. It is an environmentally friendly material. It provides protection from dust and pests from various surface cavities. Where is Acrylic Sealant Applied? Apply. Load your acrylic sealant product into a caulk gun and squeeze the trigger gently to apply a consistent bead into to joint or gap you are working with.

FAQ's

Let’s start with acrylic sealants. Acrylic sealants are the ones you mainly want to use for the gaps around your windows and door frames.

Even after curing an acrylic sealant, its waterproofing and weather-resistant properties are nowhere near a silicone sealant. There are two types of modulus; Low Modulus and High Modulus. Low Modulus sealants accommodate more movement – this is evident as they are softer to touch and are best used for exterior applications. High Modulus sealants accommodate less movement and are best used for interior applications. Sealant Uses Secondly, acrylic adhesives are more prone to outside weather and climate conditions when they are applied externally. Atmospheric conditions must always be preferably warm and dry if the acrylic sealant is to stand the test of time and prevent the curing sealant from being washed off the joint. Again, this is not the case for silicone sealants, as they are easier to tool and finish, unlike their acrylic counterparts. The way in which acrylic sealants cure is also worth highlighting. Acrylic sealants can be washed away by water if they are not allowed to dry properly first. That’s obviously a disadvantage. Obviously though, not all gaps that show up in and around your home are similar. Some gaps show up in places that are often moved around while others are in stationary spots. The rate of exposure to the elements also varies depending on the spot that needs to be sealed.

Acrylic sealant: How to apply it

Moving on now to silicone sealants, these are the items you most want to use in high-moisture locations such as bathrooms. Probably their most common use is to cover the gaps around newly installed bathtubs. Silicone sealants can handle the small movements that bathtubs tend to make because of how flexible they are. A bit of movement in any direction is not going to cause the silicone sealant to weaken.

Our range of multi-purpose sealants are fast acting and long-lasting for a flexible and resistant seal. Choose from a number of ready to use sealants including acrylic, clear silicone and all-purpose formulas from brands including UniBond, Evo-Stik, Geocel and Gorilla. MS Polymer Sealants are another “all rounder”; they have great durability, flexibility, excellent adhesion to non-porous surfaces, will bond to damp surfaces and are paintable. They are best used as an adhesive or sealant on surfaces that experience frequent vibration or strain. They are also ideal for gluing panels, skirting boards, windows, mirrors and insulation materials. For applications in wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, Akfix 100S, with the anti-mold properties, is preferred as gap filling and sealing product. Silicone Sealant is used as the sealing material in installations that require plumbing, roofing and guttering. Akfix 910NRoof and Plumbing Silicone is designed for long-term durability. It is a high performance product for applications such as connection sealing.Intumescent Sealants are designed for fire retarding constructions and generally have acoustic properties. They are suitable for indoor joints where a fire retardant seal is required to prevent the passage of smoke and vapours. For exterior use, use a fire retardant silicone. Aquarium Sealants are another form of silicone sealant, the only difference is they are non-toxic to fish and reptiles and therefore ideal for sealing aquariums and terrariums. Other Sealants for DIY Use Profile. Before the bead has dried, use a smoothing tool like the UniBond Sealant Finishing Tool to smooth it over and force it into the joint or gap to form the best seal possible. This will also remove any excess sealant, which can be scraped off in stages while smoothing the bead over. Once it has cured, you can also paint over the acrylic sealant to blend it better into its surroundings. Maintenance long-term is also easy because you can clean up acrylic sealants using just water.
